These bronze objects became emblematic of the Dong Son culture, and comparable examples are in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Musée Barbier-Mueller in Geneva. Weapons of prestige, they have been found in tombs of the distinguished elite at various locations along the Red River up to the Chinese province of Yunnan, and in the Ca Valley. The figures depicted on the handle are aristocrats or warriors, rarely women.

This beautiful and perfectly intact example has a smooth blueish patina and an iconographic particularity, as the figure wears two different types of earrings.
