Nushagak, Alaska, 19th century
Wood, black pigment
Height : 19 cm
Provenance : Donald Ellis, Toronto
Private collection, Belgium
This superb and rare mask from the Yupik tribes belongs to the corpus of shamanic masks incarnating the totemic spirit of the owl.
Stylistically, it recalls several other masks found in the Shelden Jackson Museum and UCLA. Most probably it comes from the village of Nushagak, located in the southwest of Alaska.
