Rare prehistoric figure
Enga province, Western Highlands, Papua New Guinea, circa 1500 BC

Height : 12,4 cm

Provenance : Private collection, Australia
This small marsupial-type figure is quite unique in the corpus of prehistoric stones. The petite scale and the presence of facial details such as the eyes and the ears are quite uncommon. The purpose of this sculpture remains unclear, possibly an amuletic margic figure or simply a pestle.
